On hérite d’ « obligations silencieuses » :

Infatti, non ci limitiamo a ereditare; reagiamo all’eredità.

Tali schemi vengono riattivati all’interno del transfert.

. confusione

. senso di colpa

. sensazione di essere “fuori sincrono”

. difficoltà a sentirsi legittimati

. difficoltà a stabilire confini

. tendenza a scusarsi

. paura di deludere

. iper-adattamento.

Inheritance: transmission, debts, and creations. A psychoanalytic reading.

by Pascal Neveu

Inheritance, in its psychic dimension, has little to do with objects or material assets. It is primarily a transmission of traces, ways of being, emotional tones, gestures, silences, and absences. We inherit what was lived, but also—and perhaps above all—what could not be lived. Does inheriting mean receiving more than what is actually given?

Psychoanalysis has always emphasized this idea: inheritance is an unconscious process, a circulation of signifiers, fantasies, and subjective positions.

In *Totem and Taboo*, Freud already sketched out this intuition: filiation is never merely biological; it is symbolic, imaginary, and phantasmatic. We inherit a narrative, a place in a history, and a role in a scene that began before us.

Literature, for that matter, has long understood this. Marguerite Yourcenar wrote that “we are merely the continuation of those who came before us.” Not a logical continuation, but a narrative one—an extension that may be dissonant, faithful, or marked by a break.

Inheritance thus appears as a matter of fiction and storytelling before it is a legal matter.

Amidst these invisible transmissions, what passes between people without being spoken?

First and foremost, emotional traces.

On this point, Winnicott taught us that the early environment leaves lasting imprints. We inherit an emotional climate, a way of being welcomed—or not—into the world.

Some inheritances are, in a sense, atmospheres: a family where voices are kept low; another where laughter masks tension; yet another where one apologizes for existing…

These transmissions are powerful because they are preverbal. They are inscribed in the body, in one’s breathing, and in one’s posture. They are not thought out; they are lived.

For instance, Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy demonstrated that families operate as systems of debt and loyalty. We inherit “silent obligations”:

. not to surpass a parent

. not to be happier than they were

. to repair what they could not repair

. to carry what they could not carry

Similarly, in *The Brothers Karamazov*, Dostoevsky shows how sons inherit their father’s wrongdoing, as if guilt flowed from one generation to the next.

Inheritance is sometimes a moral burden—a debt never personally incurred, yet one that must be honored.

From a psychoanalytic perspective, we must not overlook Nicolas Abraham and his wife Maria Torok, who gave a name to these silent transmissions: “phantoms” (one should read *The Shell and the Kernel*). These are secrets, traumas that have not been symbolized, and events that go unspoken yet continue to exert influence. The phantom is not a memory; it is an active “unspoken”—a psychic presence seeking to be put into words. It was their theory of “crypting” that paved the way for the study of transgenerational dynamics—albeit with the excesses that have since emerged.

In *A Man’s Place* (*La Place*), Annie Ernaux illustrates how a social and emotional legacy can transform into an internal phantom: shame, distance, and the tension between two worlds. What remained unsaid in the previous generation becomes psychic material for the next.

We must not forget that inheriting also entails defending oneself against the inheritance.

For we do not merely inherit; we react to the inheritance. Some children turn out to be the opposite of their parents, as if the only way to forge an identity were to keep one’s distance from what was passed down. It is a form of paradoxical inheritance: one inherits precisely what one rejects.

Literature frequently explores this theme. In *Sentimental Education*, Flaubert depicts how Frédéric Moreau inherits a bourgeois world he constantly flees, yet to which he is drawn back despite himself. Inheritance acts as a force of both attraction and repulsion.

Freud spoke of the repetition compulsion: that which has not been symbolized repeats itself. We sometimes inherit a way of relating, a type of romantic choice, or a pattern of failure or success. This happens not through imitation, but through an unconscious loyalty to a story seeking to replay itself.

In *The Years*, Ernaux also shows how generations repeat, echo, and contradict one another. Inheritance is a loop, a movement, a dance between what returns and what transforms.

We might also say that inheritance is a debt: what we owe, and—above all—what we *believe* we owe!

For ultimately, there exists a symbolic debt.

Lacan, for instance, emphasized the dimension of debt inherent in filiation. To him, being a son or a daughter means being inscribed within a symbolic chain. We owe something to those who came before us: not restitution, but an inscription into language, into the human world.

This debt does not induce guilt; rather, it is structuring. It allows us to situate ourselves and to know the position from which we speak.

Yet, there remains an imaginary debt—a heavy one.

. “I must succeed for their sake.”

. “I must be the person they could not be.”

. “I must bear their suffering.”

Such debts are often linked to family histories marked by migration, poverty, illness, or violence. They are powerful—sometimes crushing, or even deadly.

In *Memoirs of Hadrian*, Yourcenar illustrates the extent to which an emperor bears the debt of Rome, of his ancestors, and of his mentors. Inheritance becomes an infinite responsibility.

For us psychoanalysts, trauma is transmitted—not as memories, but as “holes” or “voids” in the symbolic order, as zones of the unspeakable. A family marked by war, violence, and exile often passes down a specific emotional tone: vigilance, mistrust, hyper-adaptation, and, above all, silence.

Contemporary psychoanalysis speaks of transgenerational transmission. Literature has always addressed this theme. In *The Kindly Ones* (*Les Bienveillantes*), Littell shows how historical trauma becomes a collective psychic legacy.

Yet, let us not dwell on the negative; for to inherit is also to create—to transform what has been received.

Winnicott, for instance, argued that creativity is not the exclusive province of artists; it is a way of inhabiting the world. Inheriting means receiving “raw material—a story, a place, a tone—and transforming it into something living.”

Literature serves as a vast stage for the transformation of heritage. Proust, for example, transforms his childhood, his loves, and his losses into a body of work that becomes a legacy for others.

Thus, heritage circulates, metamorphoses, and reinvents itself.

This is why one can also forge a symbolic lineage; for heritage is not merely what we receive, but also what we choose to adopt.

Ultimately, then, how do we inherit in a way that fosters emancipation?

How can we view transmission as a starting point?

Emancipation is not a rupture; it is a transformation. We do not free ourselves from our heritage by rejecting it, but by putting it to work, symbolizing it, and rewriting it.

Psychoanalysis makes this possible: it transforms an inherited burden into a chosen legacy. It enables a shift from repetition to creation.

The literature shows this magnificently. In “The Lover”, Duras rewrites his family history, his wounds, his silences. She transforms heritage into work, pain into style, the past into power.

Also, to inherit is to become the author of what we receive

Because inheritance is never a fixed weight. It is a living matter, a set of traces, stories, silences, debts, ghosts. We inherit what was said, but also what could not be said. We inherit gestures, atmospheres, ways of loving or defending ourselves against others, from the past.

But above all, we inherit a possibility: that of transforming what has been received, of rewriting it, of reinventing it. Inheritance is not inevitable: it is, in a way, a work in progress.

Psychoanalysis teaches us to listen to what is transmitted

Literature writes it to us and teaches us how to transform it

But above all, life invites us to do something singular, personal, in our evolution.

Because psychic inheritance is never an abstract concept in the clinic. It is seen in bodies (as Joyce McDougall or Didier Anzieu write), in repetitions, in relational choices, in symptoms, in silences.

It appears in the transfer as a living matter, sometimes burning, sometimes fragile, sometimes buried.

The patient replays in the therapeutic relationship

. the child who must protect the parent

. the one who must repair

. the one who must be silent

. the one who must be perfect,

These positions are not choices: they are unconscious assignments. They have been passed down through family history, sometimes over several generations.

In the transfer, they replay themselves. The patient may try to protect the therapist, to seduce him, to save him, to challenge him, to disappoint him, to punish him. Not because the therapist is involved, but because he occupies the place of a symbolic heir of the family scene.

There is a traumatic legacy that is transmitted like holes in the psyche. The patient does not have access to the event, but he bears its effects as disproportionate reactions to trivial situations. The therapist sometimes becomes the witness of a memory which does not belong to the patient, but to his ancestors.

A typical example: a patient who panics at the idea of losing an administrative document, even though nothing in his personal history explains it. By exploring, we discover a lineage marked by exile, precariousness, fear of the State. The symptom is a legacy of survival.

I knew him through stories of the Second World War and the Algerian War.

And this also affects love choices.

Love choices indeed remain a privileged area of inheritance. We often choose a partner who allows us to replay a family scene:

. repair a hurt parent

. save a failing parent

. fleeing an intrusive parent

. reproduce a fusion link

. et revivre une absence

The patient replays what was not developed in the previous generation.

The therapist then hears stories that are not only those of the patient, but those of their lineage.

Literature makes this a central motif. In *The Betrothed*, Manzoni shows how romantic choices are entangled in a web of family loyalties. Clinical practice encounters this same dynamic: love as a stage for inheritance.

What strikes me as most dangerous, however, is the displacement onto the body.

For the body is a site of inheritance. Some patients carry tensions, pains, and inhibitions in their bodies that do not belong to them.

The body thus becomes a repository for an unsymbolized past.

In *The War: A Memoir* (originally titled *La Douleur*), Duras shows how the body bears the memory of absence, waiting, and fear. Clinical practice recognizes this dimension: the body as an archive.

For there remains the question of secret inheritance: that which cannot be spoken but which nonetheless exerts an influence.

Indeed, family secrets are powerful legacies. They create shadowy areas within the psyche. The patient does not know what was hidden, yet bears the effects:

. confusion

. guilt

. a sense of being “out of sync”

. difficulty feeling legitimate

In psychoanalytic treatment, the secret manifests through strange silences, inconsistencies, and fragmented narratives. The therapist thus becomes the space where the secret seeks to express itself—sometimes without ever being explicitly revealed.

In *Memory of a Secret* (originally titled *Un secret*), Philippe Grimbert shows how a family secret shapes an entire life. Clinical practice encounters this phenomenon: the secret as an invisible legacy.

This allows us to consider a form of inheritance in which certain families transmit dynamics of domination:

. control

. manipulation

. inducing guilt

. role reversal

. confusion of roles/positions

Patients often arrive struggling to find their bearings, to say no, or to protect themselves. They have inherited a relational structure in which the other always holds the power.

In therapy, this manifests as:

. difficulty setting boundaries

. . a tendency to apologize

. a fear of disappointing

. hyper-adaptation.

Literature speaks powerfully to this. In *Les Enfants terribles*, Cocteau illustrates how an enmeshed relationship can turn into a form of inherited emotional bondage. Clinical practice observes this same dynamic in families where the boundary between self and other was never established.

Yet, we must also view and experience inheritance as an act of creation—where the patient transforms what they have received.

Psychoanalytic therapy enables a shift from an inheritance that is merely endured to one that is chosen:

. the patient who stops trying to fix their parents

. the one who gives up bearing the family’s suffering

. the one who creates their own symbolic lineage

. the one who transforms trauma into a creative work

. the one who invents a way of being that did not exist in their family line

For instance, in *In Search of Lost Time*, Proust shows how memory becomes creation. Clinical practice mirrors this movement: inheritance serving as raw material for a work that is ultimately internal.

In short: to inherit is to work through the very thing that is working upon us!

Inheritance is not destiny.

It is psychic material seeking to be processed and understood.

Clinical practice makes this possible: it transforms traces into words, ghosts into stories, debts into choices, and repetitions into creations.

To inherit is to be shaped by what came before us.

To heal is to work through what is shaping us.

To create is to transform what has been passed down to us.
