Perché in definitiva, ereditare significa scegliere.

Scegliere cosa conservare.

Scegliere cosa trasformare.

Inheriting a World in Flux

by Pascal Neveu

We are living through a moment when inheritance is no longer merely a matter of family or assets; it has become a civilizational issue. What we pass on and what we receive extends far beyond biological lineages. We inherit a world under strain—frail institutions, fractured collective narratives, and an exhausted planet—but also impulses, struggles, creative acts, and gestures of resistance. Inheritance is no longer a locked chest; it is a field of forces.

Sociology reminds us that every generation enters a setting that has already been constructed. Norms, roles, positions, and expectations—all of these precede the individual. We are born into a world that has already conceived of us. Yet this setting is not neutral; it is shaped by inequalities, power dynamics, and social divides. To inherit today also means inheriting the consequences of an economic model that has turned speed into a virtue and exhaustion into a condition.

Psychoanalysis adds another layer: we inherit what was left unsaid, what was never symbolized, and what was kept silent. Family ghosts, collective traumas, and invisible loyalties circulate through our bodies and our relationships. We sometimes carry stories that are not our own, yet they course through us as if they were. Inheriting means being shaped by prior narratives—stories that may be silent, distorted, or burdensome.

Philosophy, for its part, invites us to view inheritance as a matter of responsibility. Hannah Arendt reminded us that every generation must answer for the world it enters—not to justify it, but to transform it. Inheriting is not about repetition; it is about embracing the possibility of a new act. It means accepting that what comes before us is not destiny, but raw material. Inheritance is a resource, not a mandate.

Then there is the political dimension. To inherit today is also to grapple with the consequences of a time when reference points are wavering: the rise of radicalism, the weakening of public discourse, distrust of institutions, and identity-based tensions. Societies inherit their own contradictions. They pass on fractures just as much as promises. They equip their children with tools, but also with blind spots. The political realm is the space where inheritance becomes a collective choice: what do we wish to pass on, and to whom?

What is striking about this historical moment is that inheritance is no longer a vertical movement (from past to present) but a circular one. We inherit from the past, but also from the future we dread. Climate anxiety, economic uncertainty, and technological transformation create an anticipated legacy: we are already bearing the consequences of tomorrow. Inheritance thus becomes a projection, a source of anxiety, and an expanded responsibility.

Yet, amidst these tensions, something endures: the human capacity to transform what is handed down to us. Winnicott said that creativity is not a luxury, but a way of inhabiting the world. To inherit is to receive a story. To create is to write a different one. Societies, like individuals, are never condemned to mere repetition. They can reinvent, repurpose, subvert, and open up new paths.

This new issue of *Exagere* embraces this perspective: viewing inheritance not as a burden, but as a space. A space where the traces of the past, the forces of the present, and the promises of the future converge. A space where we can question what we have been given, what we wish to pass on, and what we refuse to carry forward. For ultimately, inheriting is a matter of choice.

Choosing what to keep.

Choosing what to transform.

Choosing what to leave behind.

And in a world that is wavering, this choice has never been more necessary.

As the new season begins and we look toward the transition to 2027, we felt it was important to delve deeper into these reflections.

We hope you find this an enriching read as we think about and create the world of tomorrow.
